The school is named after one of the founding members of the Sumter County Board of Education and the name draws from his legacy and the prouder moments in the history of Sumter County schools. The use of the crest in the logo draws on that historical legacy but with an updated style that points towards a bright future. Although the crest is a pretty common device in school logos, this crest is anything but conformist. It acts as the starting point for endless variations and customization for different departments and activities.

The "F" part of the logo is made up of three overlapping rectangular shapes. The three rectangles are significant and symbolize the three tenants of the Furlow approach: Academic Excellence, Cultural Awareness and Social Responsibility.
